What changes in Sweden during summer 2026?
Usually, summer is a quiet season in Sweden. People disappear on 4-6 weeks of vacation, the subway empties out, and city life slows down as everyone heads for the countryside. But this summer feels different, with a number of major new rules and reforms coming into effect.
Here's a quick summary of the changes, in case you missed them!
Migration:
From June, Swedish citizenship has become significantly harder to obtain. Applicants now need 8 years of residence (instead of 5), must demonstrate financial self-sufficiency, pass Swedish language and Swedish civic knowledge tests (citizenship test), and meet stricter "good conduct" criteria.

Taxes:
From July 1, 2026, new customs rules apply to all goods imported from outside the EU (including China, UK and USA). Items worth EUR 150 or less are subject to a EUR 3 customs fee, while higher-value goods are charged based on their value and type.
On July 1, alcohol tax was reduced for alcoholic beverages produced by independent small producers.
Between July 1 and December 31, 2026, the carbon tax on petrol and unmarked diesel will be temporarily reduced.
Other:
From July 1, 2026, psychological violence is criminalised in Sweden. It even includes restricting a person's finances, for example by controlling bank accounts, preventing them from working, or taking out loans in their name.
From July 1 to December 31, 2026, public transport fares across Sweden have been temporarily reduced by 50% on 30-day travel passes following a government decision.
The new rules for renting out bostadsrätt that came into effect on July 1, 2026, introduce a more generous approach when assessing permit applications and a new comprehensive private rental framework.
