Can You Get a Blue Card in Sweden?
Yes, you can obtain an EU Blue Card in Sweden if you meet specific requirements. Benefits of the EU Blue Card The Blue Card allows skilled professionals to live and work in Sweden, offering benefits like easier mobility within the EU and access to permanent residence after five years.
Eligibility Requirements:
Valid passport (must be valid longer than your permit).
Tertiary education (180 credits) or five years of relevant work experience.
Health insurance covering your entire stay in Sweden, including three extra months if staying less than a year.
A highly skilled job with a contract lasting at least six months.
A salary of at least 1.25 times the average Swedish salary (SEK 49,875/month starting January 2025).
Already Have a Blue Card in Another EU Country? If you’ve held an EU Blue Card in another EU country for at least 12 months, you may be able to apply for a Blue Card in Sweden. Your application must be submitted within one month of arriving in Sweden.
What has changed in 2025?
As of January 1, 2025 the following changes have been implemented:
Employment duration: The required contract length is now six months (down from one year).
The salary threshold is now 1.25 times the average Swedish salary (down from 1.5).
In high-demand sectors, it can be even lower, but not below 1.0.
A maintenance requirement has been introduced for the main applicant (that you should be able to provide for other family members).
More categories of individuals are now eligible for the EU Blue Card.
There are expanded opportunities to switch from other residence permits to the EU Blue Card within Sweden.
You can more easily change jobs or employers without needing a new Blue Card. Greater flexibility for Blue Card holders from other EU countries to do business and apply for a Blue Card in Sweden.
The time to find new employment is extended from three to six months if you become temporarily unemployed.
